The fully hollow maple body gives the guitar both the immediate attack and clarity of maple, but also an airy quality and smoothness from the hollowbody construction. The guitar weighs in at 6lbs 12oz. Here at Mike & Mike's Guitar Bar we've had this ES-175D professionally setup and strung with fresh 11-50 roundwound strings. The one-piece mahogany neck has a quintessential 1959 profile. With a chunky yet not overwhelming handful in the first position and a commanding, baseball bat shape with ample shoulder by the 5th fret and beyond.890" deep at the 1st fret and an impressive 1.030" at 9th fret as the neck begins to transition into the heel. Eck profile has its fair share of shallow nicks and light, honest wear, while the majority of the original nitro gloss is still intact.
The bound Brazilian rosewood fretboard has been professionally refretted with vintage-style wire that has perfect crowns and exhibits zero wear. The nut is a hand-carved piece of bone measuring 1 11/16 in width. On the headstock, the original Kluson Deluxe single line tuning machines with sharp edged transparent keystone buttons are intact, as is the stock truss rod cover.
The clean Gibson logo and crown inlay are present on the headstock face, which shows its fair share of minor chips around the edges but no serious wear. The undisputed pinnacle of humbucker tone, a matched pair of'59 PAFs with original covers on their own represent roughly half the value of this instrument, and as such, it's relatively rare to find an ES-175 that hasn't been robbed of these premium pickups. The original PAFs meter at. 7.71k ohms in the bridge position and 7.56k ohms at the neck. Thankfully, this particular 175 is a straight, no-excuses example, and the original wiring harness and tone caps can be seen through the treble side F hole.
The stock orange oval label with A prefix serial number is also completely intact. The stock hardware includes the floating carved and compensated Brazilian rosewood bridge, as well as the practically perfect nickel zigzag trapeze tailpiece and stock pickguard and bracket. The original quad of ambered bell knobs with lightly dished tops are intact, as is the rubber bezel around the switch and original amber switch tip. Cosmetically, the guitar will satisfy discerning collectors, and the body is remarkably clean, with a warm three-tone Sunburst nitro lacquer finish that is bold and unfaded. Aside from new lacquer on the inside edge of the Florentine cutaway (it had previously chipped off and was reapplied), the finish is 100% original.
The outer edge of the cutaway shows a collection of finish scuffs, and there is light lacquer checking on the body. One tiny split in the laminate maple on the back at the bass side waist which has been addressed and is stable, and wear is otherwise limited to. A few scattered tiny nicks on the treble-side lower bout near the knobs on the top, and a. Few light finish scratches on the back, but shy of buckle rash. The original brown Lifton hardshell case with pink interior is included.
The case retains its stock latches and feet, and the metal frame of the handle is also present. There is one spot of paint at the top of the arch on the brown mottled exterior on the lid, and the lower bout treble side edge of the case lid is also rough and separated, but overall the case is a handy tote and a fairly well preserved example.
