Up for sale, a 1973 Gibson Les Paul Deluxe, well maintained, professionally setup, and very original. Featuring a vibrant and dark original Cherry Sunburst lacquer finish, this Les Paul's warm ambered burst highlights the well matched seams on the three-piece carved maple top. Tonally, the original patent stickered mini humbuckers in this Les Paul deliver the roundness, definition, and punch that these mini humbuckers are known for.
The pickups provide a perfect blend of humbucker and single coil tonalities, enhanced by the maple/mahogany body construction. Additionally, the mahogany neck seen only on earlier iterations of the model keeps the tonal profile inherently warmer and fuller. Acoustically, the instrument has a healthy projection and bark, and the tone is singing and sweet. The top end snaps and sparkles, while the low end stays tight and focused.
We've had this Les Paul professionally setup here at Mike & Mike's Guitar Bar with 10-46 strings, low action, and accurate intonation. The three-piece mahogany neck begins as a notably slender C at the nut but quickly gains plenty of meat and shoulder, filling out with ample chunk as you travel up the fretboard. 746 deep at the 1st fret, graduating to. 982 at the 12th fret.
The guitar has been professionally refretted with 6150 medium jumbo fretwire, and the new frets show minimal wear, with lots of meat and height. The bound rosewood fretboard additionally features pearl trapezoid inlay and the nut has been upgraded to a hand-carved piece of bone, measuring 1 11/16 in width. The headstock retains the original Gibson Deluxe double line double ring tuning machines which still turn smoothly, and the headstock has a small volute on the back as well as clean Gibson logo and "Les Paul" text on the face.
The guitar was at one time fitted with different tuners as evidenced by the tiny mounting holes inset from the original tuners and light ghosting of larger tuner bushings on the headstock face. On the body, all of the electronics work as they should, with a wiring harness that retains three of the original CTS pots and one newer factory-spec CTS replacement. Both original tone caps are intact, and the original pots date to'73.
Both stock pickups are intact with the original patent number stickers on the baseplates. New replica "goof rings" have been installed around the pickups as often seen on early Norlin-era Les Pauls when the factory routing was a bit more liberal than intended. The original patent number ABR-1 bridge and chrome tailpiece are both present, along with the original quartet of reflector cap knobs. Cosmetically, this guitar shows wear through the finish down to the bare mahogany in a few spots along the back edges of the body, with some assorted minor nicks and scuffs on the guitar as a whole, and light wear along the neck profile.
This instrument is structurally sound with zero breaks or repairs and the nitro lacquer finish is original. The Cherry Sunburst is particularly warm, with minimal wear on the top and no fading of the finish. The original hardshell case is included. This case is very clean, with the original "Gibson" silkscreen on the exterior as well as original latches and handle.
