Part of Fender's "Time Machine" series, this Strat faithfully replicates the feel, appearance, and tone of Fender's Pre-CBS golden age, and this particular example is finished in a traditional nitro lacquer three-tone Sunburst. With John Page at the helm, Fender's Custom Shop in the'90s was in its renaissance, offering far more limited production than today's Custom Shop and encompassing a dream team of luthiers who would rise to prominence in the industry at Fender and beyond.A full palette of classic Strat tones are available with this model, and the black bobbin Custom Shop single coils are nuanced, clear, and bell-like. The guitar weighs in at a moderate 7lbs 13oz and balances well on a strap. Professionally setup here at Mike & Mike's Guitar Bar, this Custom Shop Stratocaster is dialed in with 10-46 strings, low action, and spot-on intonation. The quartersawn maple neck has an i.
Nviting medium C shape with a silky smooth nitro gloss finish and full shoulders, and this particular piece of maple is a premium cut with light birdseye and curly flame figuring. 860 deep at the 1st fret and.The gloss nitro lacquer is fully intact on the profile and the thick slab rosewood fretboard retains a vintage 7 1/4 radius, with vintage-style fretwire that shows m. Oderate wear beneath the plain strings on frets 1-5 and lighter wear on the crowns until fret 7. The guitar shows virtually no wear further up the fretboard and plays cleanly in all registers with a responsive truss rod and arrow straight neck. The nut measures just a hair under 1 11/16 in width.
On the headstock, the Kluson-style tuners turn as they should and hold pitch well. All of the electronics work as they should, with three Custom Shop black bobbin pickups wired to a new harness and five-way Switchcraft switch (original harness is also included). The chrome bridge base and jack plate have plenty of shine to the chrome, while the pole pieces and bridge saddles show surface patina from the past nearly quarter century. Currently setup with three springs, the vibrato is very responsive and jumps back to the original pitch with ease, even when performing deeper dives. The body and neck retain all of the proper Custom Shop markings, with the logo and chevron on the back of the headstock, and both pencil and stamped dates on the neck heel along with a stamp from Custom Shop member Hector Montes.
The Custom Shop logo is also stamped in the trem cavity, along with a signature and 2/96 date from Custom Shop builder Duane Boulanger. Cosmetically, this Strat shows l. Ight scuffing in the clear coat on the back along with some dings just north of the tremolo cavity. But no serious wear of any kind. A couple minuscule shallow nicks on the neck profile which is overall extremely clean and free of palm wear.
This Strat has clearly seen a few gigs, yet has been well cared for and faithfully represents Fender's golden era Pre-CBS specifications and a bygone era of limited Custom Shop production. The original brown tolex G&G hardshell case is included, along with all of the original factory paperwork, stock wiring harness, strap, and COA.
